Understanding Car Stereo Systems

In the last couple of decades, automobile manufacturers have put high importance on their products entertainment system. Most car manufacturers upgrade the entertainment system on each new models and units. 50 years ago vehicle manufacturers don't really put importance on the auto's audio system. Hence we only had a radio as small as a tube or a breadbox mounted at the vehicle. Now, with the technology's insertion into the manufacturing process of vehicles, new units right now have sophisticated audio system.
This article is about understanding the basics of car entertainment system of a car and not really for audio upgrade aficionados who already know how to convert simple car stereo into a 'disco-like' system.
Well, you maybe know the basic parts of an audio system and how each components and materials work like speakers, amplifiers, etc. But there are more of the 'basic' that you still don't know of, this article will teach you about the key parts of OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer's systems or factory system and how it functions.
Your car's stereo system is composed of four different components, the head units, speakers, amplifiers, and auxiliary input devices like Graphic equalizer, or CD changer.
The head unit is like the central nervous system of your car's entertainment system. This is the central processing device of the whole system. It controls the entire functions of the system like volume, tone, bass input etc. This part also includes cassette, equalizer and tuner.
The amplifiers are attached at the back of head unit, but most of factory audio designs hide the amps somewhere. This can maximize the sound and make the sound better.
The speakers take the sound signals and throw it into space. This device transforms electrical charges from amplifier into mechanical energy which produces sound.
Auxiliary Input Devices are components like equalizers or CD changers. Some car audio systems nowadays have mobile phone navigation systems, mp3 players.
